Knowing Local Laws and Regulations Before Kayak Fishing is important. In a lot of states in the U.S.A. In many areas you need a fishing license in order to take the fish you caught with you from the water. If you own a private pond that fish don’t migrate to, you don’t need a fishing license unless you want to catch frogs or turtles. For example, where I live a residential fishing license is 20.00. There are discounts for senior citizens and children. It is illegal to buy or sell any kind of fish taken by fishing from any area in Ohio which requires a fishing license. In case you didn’t know, a setline is a fishing like hanging from the shore attached to many other fishing lines with baited hooks. You are allowed to use up to six of these in public waters. Trotlines are basically the same as setlines. You may want to look at a fish identification guide to see and know about which fish you catch and make sure you have your license on you in case someone wants to check it.

When fishing from a Kayak you can see all of the fish up close because they don’t run away like they do if you were in a speed boat. It’s a great eco-friendly way to experience nature. You can also go fishing for lobsters and crabs with a bated hoop net. It may be difficult to obtain a lobster fishing license, though. Fishing for lobsters is a little different than regular fishing as you use something called a lobster pot and you can leave the fishing site by marking your trap area with a buoy. It’s best to bring a GPS system wherever you go and tell someone where you’re going and when. Have fun!
